Fractions » Combined operations with fractions
Below you will see three examples of combined operations with fractions.
Example 1
4 × 56 – (13)2 – 52 × 73 = 206 – 16 – 356 = 20 – 1 – 356 = –166 = –83 = –223
Example 2
15 + 2x = x5x + 105x = x + 105x
Example 3
23 – 3412 + 56 = 812 – 91236 + 56 = –11286 = –11243 = –112 × 34 = –1 × 312 × 4 = –348 = –116
Because dividing by a fraction is multiplying by the reciprocal*, you can do –11243 = –112 × 34 in the last example
* The reciprocal of a fraction is the inverse of a fraction. So where the numerator and the denominator are swapped.
